Warm-up Exercises

  • Warming up before practice with exercises like scales and arpeggios is important discipline to improve technique, agility, and familiarity with the harp. I assign a warm-up routine for each student based on the student’s experience and ability.

Theory

  • Both reading sheet music and understanding music by ear are essential, due to the nature of intonation on the violin. I will assign scales, arpeggios, as well as any ear-training exercises necessary to assist students on the journey to mastery. The majority of theory and technique, however, is more easily addressed through applied study according to each student’s ability, through assigning pieces that include new technical skills.

Repertoire

  • My goal in assigning new pieces is to give the student enough of a challenge to keep them productive during weekly practice, but also to make it as doable and fun as possible! The number, style, length, and complexity of the songs I assign are entirely dependent on the student’s skill level, practice habits, and preference. Students will also learn Christmas music each fall semester.

Weekly Practice Expectations

  • Consistent and accurate practice is a non-negotiable in music; there is just no way around it! To assist younger students in getting into the discipline of daily (or almost daily) practice, I provide a clear and doable practice chart for each student, outlining practice expectations. I am happy to check in with the student and parent each week to assess how practice is going.
